15 Smoking Hot Ways to Use LinkedIn for Job Search

15 Smoking Hot Ways to Use LinkedIn for Job Search LinkedIn is a game changer for job seekers as well. It can put the power back into the hands of candidates and out of the hands of recruitment consultants. There are plenty of ways you can be proactive, rather than reactive in your job search. Here are my 15 top LinkedIn job hunting tips, in no particular order. There is no point being half-hearted. This point is my big bandwagon point for Australian professionals and job seekers. Connect with people. Look up people from your past and find out where they work now. Use the connect email to invite people for coffee and find out what they are up to. Show some interest in them, and what you are looking for, job wise, will inevitably come up. Find a role model networker who is working in your desired area. Look to see which groups they belong to and join those. Start a group around your area of interest and expertise. Invite people who can add value to join. Welcome them to the group and ask them a question directly. You can build up your knowledge of their organisation, any problems they may be facing, and approach them with a solution in mind (you). Look to see who has viewed your profile, and add them to your network. If they are recruiters, see if they have jobs   coming up in your area. As a carrot to see you, mention that you may have useful contacts for them. Look to see where people with your background are working and what their responsibilities are. That way if you want to approach a company directly about jobs, you are making an informed and targeted approach. Invite people out for coffee to find out what they do. This is a good tactic if you want to change careers. You can find out the good, bad and ugly about their jobs, and whether that might be an area of interest for you. Add value to your network. Be known as someone helpful. You often have to build trust with people before you can ask them for favours. If you see someone asking a question, then answer it. Be proactive and send them an email with a link. Update your status with recent information of use to your network. You’ll give people a reason to contact you if you do that. Link your LinkedIn profile to your personal emails to  make it easy for people to connect with you. Put your LinkedIn link to your Facebook profile. I have seen jobs come through friends, and Facebook is one place people tell their friends if they’re looking for staff. You want to make it easy for people to check you out. Go along to social events that are organized via LinkedIn. There is only so much you can achieve online. Trust is better built face to face. Ask a connection for an introduction. That’s kind of one of the big points of LinkedIn. Find out what a job really requires. Job advertisements often have a lot of woolly wording. If you can, find a company insider to give you the insight into what the company is about, or even what the job requires. They may even pass on your resume, and save the company a recruitment fee. Your turn! Let us know what your best LinkedIn tip is in the comment section below. Related: Why Facebook Sucks for Job Search.

10 Creative Ways To Find Military Discounts For Veterans

10 Creative Ways To Find Military Discounts For Veterans Military discounts are just one-way companies can say “thank you” to a veteran. Unfortunately for vets, there isn’t one holding tank that lists all the discounts to take advantage of. Veterans like to save money just like any other red-blooded consumer, so these discounts are rarely turned away but they have to be found, first. SheerID did a study on U.S. veterans and found: 68% currently take advantage of some sort of military discount. 75% said more discounts would be welcomed if they could find them. 85% reported they are more likely to shop on military appreciation days when stores offer discounts. Clearly, when a military discount is found, it is definitely used and appreciated. Since there isn’t a clearinghouse on where to find these discounts, vets and their families have to find creative ways to track these deals down. Here are 10 creative ways to find military discounts for veterans. #1 Check out Brad’s Deals  While no website really holds the key to all the discounts available, Brad’s Deals has a passable list of discounts that seems fairly up-to-date. VeteranAid.org references the same list, which is divided into more than a dozen categories, including: Automotive Beauty and Cosmetics Clothing Computer and Electronics Education Entertainment Health and Wellness Restaurants Sporting Goods Travel and Lodging Vacation Many of these discounts offer 10 to 20% off a purchase. Some of the more unusual discounts listed include free federal tax filing with TurboTax and a free banner and sign to welcome a veteran home at Build a Sign. In fact, Build a Sign says they’ve donated 337,000 Welcome Home banners and signs since 2008. One tip: These deals require a valid military ID. The difficulty is that many businesses do not understand the wide variety of documentation carried by military personnel. The Military Wallet has a good article on how to pick up an ID card. #2 Speaking of the Military Wallet  Visit the Military Wallet website for a decent list of deals and discounts for veterans. It’s also a good website for financial advice. There’s a podcast which focuses on issues such as retirement, education benefits, healthcare, and more. The author, Ryan Guina, served more than six years in the USAF and another three in the Air National Guard, so the site blogs have a personal feel that veterans will relate to. #3 Military.com  Military.com is an excellent site for all kinds of information, jobs, and deals for veterans. Go to the Discounts page, for great veterans discounts, along with tips. Here are some examples: How to find flight discounts. How to snag cell phone plan discounts. Where to find freebies with a military ID. This is a great website that has advice, support, helpful tips, and much more for the military veteran and their families. #4 Just Ask The best way to find out if there is a discount available for military personnel is pretty simple: Just ask. Make sure to carry a military ID. A simple, “Do you offer a military discount?” could open the door to big savings. Calling ahead to find out in advance, could save some hassle; some store employees might not be aware of the discount. Some stores have a very specific fine print that may not be communicated to employees. A quick phone call, or, just being patient while an employee speaks with a manager, may net savings. Just get in the habit of asking, and reap the rewards. #5 Research State Discounts  There are also discounts specific to states and cities. VeteranAid has researched a number of cities and states where local businesses have stepped up to offer discounts, including popular tourist destinations like Chicago, Orlando, Houston, Atlanta, San Antonio, and Philadelphia. #6 Conduct Homework Because there are so many local, state, and national discounts available, it’s impossible to list them all. This means that the individual will need to spend an hour or two conducting research relevant to the retailers and services they frequent. When researching discounts, start close to home. What are the businesses most commonly frequented by the veteran’s family? Then look at some of the discounts that might be available online from big-box retailers. The question to ask is: Where does the veteran shop or what services do they need? Then methodically find out if a discount is available. #7 Military Appreciation Day  Taking advantage of an entire month of special events, discounts and freebies is something any veteran can take advantage of every year. Military Benefits is a website devoted to all the good things that veterans deserve and they have a page devoted to the May celebration of the armed service personnel called the National Military Appreciation month. There are six national celebrations during that month that range from Memorial Day, Armed Forces Day, and Military Spouse Appreciation Day to name a few. #8 The American Legion  The American Legion, the nation’s largest wartime veterans organization, is devoted to sponsoring events in the community to improve the lives of service members and promoting patriotism and service. This organization offers an entire page devoted to “everyday discounts” for members of the military. The categories include everything from auto care and transportation, medical and insurance, restaurants, retails, and much more. Offers.com also has a page devoted to some of the sales and discounts offered on Veterans Day. #9 Offers.com  Offers.com has a whole page devoted to a compilation of military discounts. Viewers are able to add discounts in the comments section of this page, so the list is pretty up to date. Instead of categorizing the discounts by type of product or service offered, the website lists these bargains by the percentage off. Viewers can even search for free offers on all kinds of services. #10 AARP  In addition to offering a 20% membership discount for veterans over 50, the American Association of Retired People (AARP) offers a page on their website that lists a number of discounts and free services for vets. From free admission to the Baseball Hall of Fame to hotels and attractions, AARP is all about the discounts for veterans. It may even be possible to combine an AARP discount with a military bargain! Military Veterans Deserve the Very Best  Military veterans have a variety of discounts available on special occasions that honor their service, but also a variety of everyday bargains. It’s important to stay alert for these deals because more are being added all the time. Businesses and organizations remain very interested in honoring the service of our veterans and these heroes should enjoy the benefits in good conscience and with pride.

Why Website Trust Signals Are Needed to Attract Top Talent

Why Website Trust Signals Are Needed to Attract Top Talent How can you make sure your employer brand is trustworthy and credible? Start by looking at your website is it full of trust signals or  trumpet-blowing? I’ve spoken to Filip Matous who is a Digital Strategist and author of How To Get Your Website Noticed, to find out more about  the simple mistakes many businesses make digitally, and how to overcome them. What are trust signals? So think about whatever your site is, and think of it in four layers. And Ill tell you how these trust signals tie into it. A good example of this is the Alec Baldwin scene in Glengarry Glen Ross when hes got this seven-minute monologue, hes got the chalkboard behind him, and its fantastic. Google it if you haven’t already seen it. So at the top, he writes on the chalkboard A-I-D-A. And this is what it means: A, is attention. So, if youre thinking about your website, its how are you getting attention?  So things like are you getting it through PR, are you getting it through paid advertising? Are you getting it through search engines? Are you getting it through social media or are you getting it through direct marketing? I stands for interesting. And thats when people come into it. It’s the first time they come to your website, and think is it interesting? And thats actually quite a loaded question, is your website interesting enough? D, and thats desire. So, thats usually in a lot of sales situations, especially I would guess, and Im not as well-versed in HR and recruitment, but its usually to get someone to trust a brand, youll notice that people have returned to the website multiple times. So, desire for me, the easiest way to understand desire, is are you getting multiple visits back to your website? And then, finally, A, and thats the action. So, you might be trying to get more qualified candidates or you might be trying to get more clients. And if those, say, are your two main goals on your website, for the whole funnel of this A-I-D-A to work, youre going to be measuring how long it takes you to get to the action.  What kind of actions are you getting? Are they the right kind of people? And if you havent figured out the layers one by one, its very hard to arrive at the action. So, trust signals isn’t just saying Oh, my site is trustworthy, or when youre looking at your site youre like, Hmm, is this trustworthy? I want to pull apart the things that make people trust your website. And what I want to get away from is that gut reaction. When youre looking at your own site its very hard to be objective, so what I want to pull apart in this podcast is to really tell you what is it that makes people say, Hmm, this seems trustworthy. Are things like As seen in the Times, or We have been awarded the best employer to work for, trust signals? So thats an example of one tactic that can be quite effective for someone who wants to know Hey, who is Jorgen? Who is this guy? And I Google your name and lets say I arrive at Link Humans. I can then arrive at some project that youre involved in when I hit that first page. But when you get there, youre thinking You know what, is this for me? Because, obviously, we live in a world where if theyre on a desktop and theres probably like a dozen tabs open. They may be giving a certain amount of time to your website or maybe theyre giving it like ten seconds to just get an idea of, Is this for me? And if it can first pass the Is it for me stage, then theres this sprinkle of interest. And then it goes on to Does this seem credible? And thats where things like As mentioned on Glassdoor or We work with LinkedIn or whatever it might be helps. If there are brands that people do recognize, and do trust, and it appears with your brand, and theyve never heard of your brand, then thats one thing, thats one little trust signal thatll just bump up the overall. Together, its all a bit complex because there are multiple trust signals that will hit them. So another trust signal right off the bat might be, does the first line, that USP, the big headline at the top of your site if youve got one, Does this sound like its for me and does this sound like its real? And if youre trying to showboat by saying were so passionate, and this is a ground-breaking company, etc. If youre using boring language like that, that usually goes against you, and people are sceptical of it.  So my advice would be, when youre thinking trust signals, youre thinking of a very sceptical audience. A poll was carried out on one copywriter which is actually fantastic. Her name is Joanna Wiebe and shes a Canadian-based conversion copywriter. And she says: When people hit your site for the first time, its just got to pass two things. Its got to say so what? And then its got to prove it, and its got to do if fast. So, Why am I here? Why did I just hit this page? Yeah, okay, this sounds like its for me, and then right after theyre thinking, All right, prove it. Is thi s actually worth my time? So the two things which are quite handy to remember is “so what?” And then “prove it.” What do people get wrong about trust signals? I think the biggest misconception that I see over and over again is people think that they can self-qualify themselves or they can prove that theyre worth a website visitors time by saying that theyre trust Not necessary to say, Im trustworthy, but, trying to say how good they are. And every rule can be broken but on your website, anytime you say something nice about yourself, you cant say it yourself. So, what does that mean? If you want to say your culture as a recruitment agency is a fit for the candidate, the type of candidate youre trying to appeal to, you need to get other candidates that have gone through your agency, or your company, to say that. You might be able to say that this is what you stand for, and this is what your beliefs and values are as a company. It might be that you are a recruitment agency that serves the creative industry. So youre looking at people that work in advertising, in marketing or in PR and you might be trying to come across as hip or cool. But you can say that, and you can show pictures from your office. So a trust signal might be a picture from within your office, and people can see how youre dressed, or how many people there are. But you want the candidate, through the means of a testimonial, to say “I really liked working with this recruitment agency and the reason why I liked working with them is because culturally they really get what it is to be a creative, and its something that I didnt experience in the five other companies or recruitment agencies that Id gone through.” They have to give you that testimonial, you cant say it yourself. So, to answer the question, the moment you think th at you can pat yourself on the back and put that on the website, youre doing it wrong. How can you build trust at the very top of the funnel? So that is where the random role of PR comes in. Usually you can control the experience once people hit your website to kind of present the side of your company you want to present. But at attention, if, lets say, you want to get some coverage in the press and usually a lot of people are like, Well, I dont want to pay that PR agency that much money to get press or that freelancer or consultant.” Where PR is quite handy is if an article placed on another site that the audience recognizes, lets say a brand which is relevant for your recruitment agency to end up on Inc or Entrepreneur or Forbes, or whatever brand that your audience is used to seeing. If you can appear on that website, and create the first time theyve heard of your brand and create that attention, by the time that traffic goes from that article back to your website or they bookmark the article, then they end up googling your brand a week later, or whatever. When that traffic hits, the performance of that traffic is so much better than pretty much any other traffic Ive seen. And its a lot lower. But you dont get the volume of traffic if youre doing a bunch of advertising, because that advertising traffic when it hits your site is sceptical. It is not ready to believe anything you have to say. But when that traffic comes from a PR placement, and its in a publication that someone trusts, and then they come back to your website, theyre already warm. You dont have to prove to them or sell to them as hard. And that is one way, at the attention level to get trust going, by using some PR because people will trust your website a lot more if thats the original way they heard of you. 5 Leading Careers In Aviation â€" CareerMetis.com Careers in aviation have always been in high demand, thanks to crafty marketing that has positioned pilots and flight attendants as arguably the coolest jobs in the world, second only to astronauts. But for the people who don’t fancy traipsing around the world for free and lounging in hotels, there are other options to consider that are just as fulfilling.Ifyou, like most of the population, have a fear of flying, then there are other options on this list that would not require you to leave the ground, but still be vital to the aviation industry.evalBut here are the top five careers you might want to think about pursuing in Aviation:1) Pilot/co-pilotevalThe most highly coveted profession in the aviation industry is the pilot. The Qualities Required to Become Cabin Crew - How2Become The Qualities Required To Become Cabin Crew Members of cabin crew have two main roles in their job; these are the safety of all the passengers and delivering great customer service. Cabin crew must have excellent interpersonal skills and these will be assessed throughout the selection process and will play an important part in your overall success. The main focus of the role of cabin crew will always be on safety. A serious decision to evacuate the aircraft will always rest with the cockpit crew, but the cabin crew have the responsibility to oversee the evacuation and make sure that this is carried out according to the rules and procedures. The key role of cabin crew remains exactly as it always has been, and that is to keep all the passengers safe. The cabin crew are obliged to provide a safety briefing before the flight and to ensure that the passengers pay attention to it. If an emergency situation arises the cabin crew are trained to help the passengers leave the aircraft swiftly and safely. The cabin crew can make or break the reputation of an airline. They must be well-presented, be professional and make a good impression on passengers to encourage them to us the same airline again in the future. Airline companies know that passengers who experience bad customer service from cabin crew will change the airline they use; it’s as simple as that. This is why airline companies look for future cabin crew members who go to the assessment and interview with their eyes open to what the role of cabin crew is all about. They will want them to have shown an interest in the airline they have applied to, by knowing some history about the airline and where they fly to and from. They must be people who work well in a group and that have a friendly, confident and caring nature.   Before you attend the assessments and cabin crew interview it is vital that you understand the role and also understand the key qualities required to carry out the role competently. Numerical competence Cabin crew need to be competent in the use of basic arithmetic. During the flight you will need to work with money when selling duty free goods and refreshments. You will also have to have an understanding of currency rates and conversions. Whilst you do not need to be a mathematician to become cabin crew, you should have a good basic understanding of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.   Being a role model for the airline This attribute is very similar to customer service skills. The airline wants you to promote them in the best possible light. Therefore, how you behave whilst at work, and also whilst away from work, are very important. Excellent communication skills Cabin crew have to be able to communicate with the following groups of people: â€" Cockpit crew â€" Passengers â€" Other cabin crew team members â€" Airport staff and representatives Of course, there will be other people they will have to communicate with during their career; however, the above four groups are the main people they will come in to contact with during their day-to-day duties. Their communication skills must be excellent. Let’s assume that there’s a safety issue with the aircraft during the flight and you are required to communicate a safety message to the passengers using the public address (PA) system. It is essential that you remain calm and communicate the message in a confident and concise manner. If the passengers detect any hint of stress or concern in your voice, they will become agitated. How to Write a Great Resume - Effective Resume Writing Tips For Newbies

How to Write a Great Resume - Effective Resume Writing Tips For NewbiesIf you want to learn how to write a great resume, then this article will give you some 10 effective resume writing tips. These tips are meant to help you write a great resume that will provide you with the right chances of getting hired. The first thing that you need to do is to know why you want to get hired and what position you want to apply for in order to create an effective resume. Many people think that they need to list every job experience that they have ever had in order to present themselves in the best light possible. This is simply not true.Instead, list down your most relevant skills and knowledge as it relates to the position that you want to apply for. Keep it as short as possible. Too many resumes these days contain unnecessary information and thus make it difficult for employers to read. One of the most important tips when writing an effective resume is to make sure that the information contained i n it is concise. Try to keep it to one page at the most. Having too much information on one page will cause the recruiter to lose the information and then stop your application. By keeping it brief, you will not only get the right chances for a chance to interview, but you will also be more likely to get hired the very next time you apply.Never use personal or any type of contact information in your resume. There is nothing more depressing than looking for a job and having to answer an email from someone that was once your boss. You do not want to end up wasting the recruiter's time by asking him/her for a reference. If you don't want to be harassed by the recruiter to call their contacts, then don't include any contact information in your resume. If you are using a method that will help you create an excellent resume for you, then use an outline. Using an outline will help you create a resume that can be understood by the hiring manager without having to read each section of the res ume.You need to understand that the recruiter is also looking for proof of your education. While you may have a degree, it doesn't mean anything if you haven't gone to school for a number of years. So in your resume, you need to provide references for your education as well as any certifications that you may have received. However, don't include any letters of recommendation. These 10 effective resume writing tips should be enough to help you write a great resume that will be written up quickly so that you can get the interviews that you need to get the job that you want. Remember that it is much better to apply for jobs that you would be happy to work for rather than wasting your time applying for jobs that you don't want to work for. You need to apply for jobs that you can actually be happy working for, not the jobs that you are forced to apply for.
